Overview
Based on the requirements for the NFPA 1002 standard for Fire Apparatus Driver Operator Professional (Chapter 5, 2017), this SFA program will equip you to have expertise in pumper operations. All training will be delivered by experts in the discipline, and will be completed on campus, with a working fire apparatus. At the end of the four-day course, firefighters actively working with a department will qualify to complete OFMEM NFPA 1002 IFSAC testing. If you are a prospective firefighter, not yet hired by a municipal department, the good news is you can still take this course! Upon completion, you will ascertain a certificate from SFA, and when you are hired on a department in the future (and have a DZ license), you will qualify to complete the OFMEM testing, for full certification.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course. If you wish to participate in the OFMEM testing, you are required to be an active member of a municipal fire department and to have your DZ Drivers License.
Program Components
This course has three components: individual pre-course work, an instructor-led theory component, and a practical component. The pre-course work involves educating yourself on pumper operations prior to your arrival on campus. You can do this using the IFSTA textbook, which you will have to purchase independently. The theory and practical components are completed on campus, during your four-day program.
During your four-day course on campus, you will cover such topics as pump functionality, pump maintenance, field calculations (friction loss), nozzle types, appliances, foam considerations, and relay pumping. You will then be led through the hands-on approach of applying your knowledge to real-life simulations and scenarios, so you can effectively grasp how to utilize a pumper.
Note: OFM Testing is on the day following four days of program delivery.
Certification
Candidates successful in this program will receive a certificate of completion from Southwest Fire Academy. You will then qualify for OFM Testing if you meet the following criteria:

- You complete the testing registration process and provide the letter at least five weeks before the testing date
