Course Overview
The Fire Service Instructor Level I program at Southwest Fire Academy (SFA) is fully compliant with the NFPA 1041: Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications Standard (2019 edition). This course is designed for current emergency service personnel who wish to develop the foundational skills and instructional techniques necessary to effectively train others in the fire service.

Course Format and Delivery
The course includes mandatory self-directed pre-course work and 2.5 days on in-person training which will take place on the SFA campus, covering all required components of the NFPA 1041 standard.
Self-Directed Learning: Approximately 40 hours
In-person: 20 hours
- Friday – 5:00pm-9:00pm
- Saturday – 8:00am-5:00pm
- Sunday – 8:00am-5:00pm

Certification and Eligibility
Upon successful completion of the program, candidates will receive a Certificate of Completion from Southwest Fire Academy. To qualify for Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) Provincial Testing, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be an active firefighter with a recognized Fire Department
- Submit an official Eligibility Letter from your department

Please note: if this course is not filled to 75% capacity 7 days before it is scheduled to begin, it may be cancelled. In the event of course cancellation, you will be provided adequate notice and a full refund.
Accommodations may be available upon request for the duration of your program. If you are staying for one or two nights, the flat rate for accommodations is $50 plus taxes. If you are staying for three or more nights, the fee is $100 plus taxes, total. Regardless of how long you are on campus, your fee will not exceed $100 plus taxes. This fee grants you access to your bunk, a communal kitchen, parking, and washroom/shower facilities.
