    This course includes NFPA 1072 HAZMAT Awareness and Operations training.  If you require OFMEM certification testing to recieve IFSAC and ProBoard seals, ensure that you select OFMEM testing in the checkout. Requests for OFMEM testing must be recieved atleast 4 weeks before testing date.  Testing dates are October 23(practical) & 24th(written), 2021 

    The IFSTA Hazardous Materials for First Responders is a required text for this course.  It can be purchased seperately at checkout.

    Course Name – SFA NFPA 1072(17) Hazardous Materials Technician Level

    Course Length:

    60 Hours of Online Interactive Pre-Class

    5 Days or 40 Hours of Practical Instruction

    NOTE – Pre-Service students are not eligible to test for OFMEM.  This not a Southwest Fire Academy rule, but an OFMEM rule.  Municipal firefighters are eligible to test.

    Testing will be November 19th (practicals) & November 20th (written).  Letters from your department requesting testing must be sent to registrations@fire-academy no later then October 15th, 2021.

    Course Description:

    Southwest Fire Academy provides candidates with a unique training opportunity for candidates to become trained and qualified to NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials Technician Level.  This 80-hour course meets the requirements outlined in NFPA 1072(17).  Successful students will receive a certificate and completed Job Performance Requirements.  Training includes:

    • Equipment familiarization / inspection and maintenance
    • Decontamination
    • Air Monitoring and Sampling
    • Plugging / Patching
    • A / B / C Kits
    • Incident Command
    • Planning and Research


    Candidates will experience training sessions as well as they will run several scenarios based on actual calls that our instructors have experienced!


    SFA offers realistic training on life size and interactive props that ensure that our students face the challenges of mitigating a hazardous materials emergency while wearing PPE including:

    • Level A Suits
    • Level B Suits
    • SAR
    • SCBA



    NFPA 472 Operations or NFPA 1072 Operations

    • CSA approved footwear (steel toe)
    • Camera – we encourage you take pictures
    • Station work wear – long pants / long sleeves recommended
